The sun aligned on the statue of Ramses II in Aswan's Abu Simbel Temple on Thursday morning in a rare astronomical phenomenon that occurs biannually on 22 October and 22 February.
After Pharaoh Ramses II died, the Abu Simbel temple was built as a site of worship for him and a symbol of dominance towards the freshly conquered Nubian land. The four enormous sculptures of Ramses II outside the Abu Simbel temple are its most famous feature.
