Practical guide to Egypt

The essentials for a comfortable week in Cairo in November.

Currency and payments
  • The currency is the Egyptian pound, written EGP or LE.
  • Cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants and larger shops.
  • It is useful to carry a small amount of cash in pounds for tips and small purchases. ATMs are easy to find, including at the airport.
Electricity and plugs
  • Egypt uses 220 volts at 50 Hz.
  • Sockets take plugs with two round pins (types C and F), the same as most of continental Europe. Guests from the UK, the Gulf or North America should bring an adaptor.
Weather in November
  • November is one of the most pleasant months in Cairo: dry and sunny, with daytime temperatures typically in the mid-20s Celsius.
  • Evenings are noticeably cooler, usually in the mid-teens. Two of your dinners are outdoors or by the water, so bring a light jacket or wrap.
  • Rain is rare. The sun at the pyramids is strong even in winter.
What to wear
  • Business attire for the business session on Wednesday.
  • Smart casual for touring, with closed, comfortable shoes for the Giza Plateau and the Citadel.
  • Shoulders and knees covered for the mosque at the Citadel.
  • The gala dinner on the Nile has a White & Blue theme.
  • A hat, sunglasses and sun protection for Thursday at the pyramids.
Local customs
  • Egyptians are warm and hospitable. "Shukran" means thank you; "Ahlan" is an informal welcome you will hear often.
  • Tipping is customary in Egypt for small services.
  • Please ask before photographing people. Some museum halls, including the Royal Mummies Hall, do not allow photography.
  • Friday is the main day of rest. Alcohol is served at the hotel and at licensed restaurants.
Time, language and staying connected
  • Egypt is on UTC+2 in November.
  • Arabic is the national language. English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants and museums, and your tours are led by Egyptologist guides.
  • Mobile coverage is good across Cairo. Local SIM cards and eSIMs are sold at the airport.
Health and useful tips
  • Drink bottled water rather than tap water.
  • Cairo traffic is unpredictable, so departures leave on time. Please be in the lobby five minutes early.
  • Keep your passport with you on arrival and departure days; otherwise the hotel safe is the best place for it.
  • In an emergency, call your Kadmar contact first. National numbers: ambulance 123, police 122, tourist police 126.

Day 3, Thursday 12 November

The Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx

The last surviving wonder of the ancient world stands on a limestone plateau where Cairo meets the desert. Three pyramids, raised for the kings Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure some 4,500 years ago, with the Great Sphinx keeping watch below them.

  • The Great Pyramid was built for King Khufu, also known as Cheops, around 2560 BC. It originally rose to about 146 metres and remained the tallest structure on Earth for roughly 3,800 years.
  • It contains an estimated 2.3 million blocks of stone, most of them weighing more than two tonnes.
  • Its four sides face the cardinal points of the compass with an error of only a fraction of a degree.
  • The Great Sphinx was carved in place from a single outcrop of limestone. It is about 73 metres long and 20 metres high.
  • The Valley Temple of Khafre is lined with red granite that was shipped more than 800 kilometres down the Nile from Aswan.

Day 3, Thursday 12 November, 08:30–11:00

The Grand Egyptian Museum

Opened in November 2025 within sight of the pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum is the largest museum in the world devoted to a single civilisation. Its galleries follow ancient Egypt across some thirty dynasties.

  • The museum holds around 100,000 artefacts.
  • For the first time since Howard Carter opened the tomb in 1922, the complete Tutankhamun collection of more than 5,000 objects is displayed together.
  • A colossal statue of Ramesses II, about 3,200 years old and weighing 83 tonnes, receives visitors in the atrium.
  • More than 60 statues and monumental pieces line the Grand Staircase.
  • A separate building houses the 4,600-year-old cedar boat of King Khufu, some 44 metres long, found beside the Great Pyramid in 1954.

Day 3, Thursday 12 November, 13:00–14:00

Khufu's Restaurant

Lunch is served on the Giza Plateau itself, with the pyramids filling the view from the table. Under executive chef Mostafa Seif, the kitchen gives the cooking of the Nile Valley a contemporary reading.

  • Khufu's was named No. 1 in Middle East & North Africa's 50 Best Restaurants 2026, the first restaurant in Egypt to take the top place.
  • It sits inside the Giza pyramid complex, so the monuments stay in view throughout lunch.
  • The menu is rooted in traditional Egyptian dishes, reworked with modern technique.

Day 2, Wednesday 11 November, 09:50–11:20 (customers' programme)

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization

In Fustat, the site of Egypt's first Islamic capital, this museum tells the whole story of Egyptian civilisation in one building, from prehistory to the present day. Most visitors come for one hall above all.

  • The Royal Mummies Hall holds 22 royal mummies, 18 kings and four queens, among them Ramesses II, Seti I and Queen Hatshepsut.
  • They arrived in April 2021 in the Pharaohs' Golden Parade, a televised procession through Cairo from the old Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square.
  • The museum looks out over Ain El-Sira, a natural lake in the heart of old Cairo.

Day 2, Wednesday 11 November, 11:45–13:15 (customers' programme)

Al-Azhar Park and Granita

Brunch is at Granita, on a green hilltop in the middle of historic Cairo. A generation ago this was a mound of rubble.

  • The park covers about 30 hectares and opened in 2005. It was a gift to the city from His Highness the Aga Khan.
  • Building it meant clearing debris that had accumulated on the site for some five hundred years.
  • Excavation uncovered a long stretch of Cairo's twelfth-century Ayyubid city wall, which has since been restored.
  • From the terraces the view takes in the Citadel and the domes and minarets of the old city.

Day 2, Wednesday 11 November, 13:30–15:00 (customers' programme)

Salah El-Din Citadel

For nearly seven hundred years Egypt was governed from this fortress on a spur of the Muqattam hills. Its terrace gives one of the finest views over Cairo, and on a clear day the pyramids can be seen on the horizon.

  • Salah El-Din, known in the West as Saladin, began the Citadel in 1176 to defend the city.
  • It remained the seat of Egypt's rulers until the 1870s, when the court moved to Abdeen Palace.
  • The Mosque of Muhammad Ali, completed in 1848, crowns the site. Its domes and twin minarets are among Cairo's best-known landmarks.
  • The Citadel lies within Historic Cairo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

Day 2, Wednesday 11 November, 18:45–21:15

Gala dinner on the Nile at Zoé

Both groups come together for the gala dinner at Zoé Restaurant, aboard the First Nile Boat. The evening has a White & Blue theme, with live music, the Cleopatra Gift & Oil Bar and a Volvo photobooth.

  • The Nile runs for some 6,650 kilometres and flows north, which is why southern Egypt is called Upper Egypt.
  • Almost the entire population of Egypt lives along the river and its delta, as it has since antiquity.
  • On Roda Island in Cairo stands a Nilometer built in 861 AD, a graduated stone column used to measure the annual flood and forecast the harvest.

Giza Palace Hotel & Spa

Giza Palace Hotel & Spa stands on the 26th of July Corridor in Sheikh Zayed, west of the pyramids. It is your home for the week, the venue for the importer partners' business session and the setting for the welcome dinner at Beit El Ezz.

  • The Grand Egyptian Museum is about 20 km away and the Giza Plateau about 22 km.
  • Cairo International Airport is 48 km away, usually 60 to 75 minutes by car.
  • On arrival day, check-in is handled at the Kadmar registration desk in the hotel.
  • Breakfast is served from 06:30 to 11:00, and from 06:00 on Thursday 12 November for the early start.

Day 4, Friday 13 November

Ain Sokhna and the GB Auto factory

Ain Sokhna is Cairo's nearest stretch of Red Sea coast, on the western shore of the Gulf of Suez. You are here as guests of GB Auto, for a visit to the manufacturing facility where buses are built on Volvo chassis.

  • Ain Sokhna means "hot spring" in Arabic, after the warm sulphur springs that rise at the foot of the coastal mountains.
  • It lies roughly 120 kilometres east of Cairo.
  • Archaeologists have uncovered a pharaonic harbour here, used some 4,000 years ago for expeditions across the gulf to the copper and turquoise mines of Sinai.

Day 4, Friday 13 November, 20:00–23:00

Sachi Park Street

The final evening is spent at Sachi Park Street in Sheikh Zayed, ten minutes from the hotel. A section of the restaurant is reserved for the group, with a sharing menu and music through the evening.

  • Coaches leave the hotel at 19:30 and return at 23:00.
  • The menu is served to share, so the table can try a little of everything.
